Here's something I found completely by accident and it's so obvious I can't believe Vault.com hasn't locked this down. Vault.com provides surveys and information on employers. Basically they'll provide summary information and if you click on the link you can then view the details for a fee. Using Google you can get at all the employee survey information only available by subscription at no cost just by passing the following query:

I'm pretty excited about the recent launch of my new weblog, RedmondGadgets.com. It has continued to increase in traffic. From getting dugg over at digg.com the first day of launch on a story about the Xbox, to continued interest being generated being a site devoted to Microsoft consumer technologies. It is a jump from my flagship site WWWCoder.com which is devoted to ASP.NET developers, but my hope is that RedmondGadgets.com will exceed the traffic that WWWCoder.com gets (about 4,500 visitors per day).

RedmondGadgets.com stays true to the weblog format, whereas Read More »

I thought this was an odd one, apparently my name is so associated with the term DotNetNuke that in my RedmondGadgets.com contact us page, there is no mention of DotNetNuke, just my name and the Google Adsense ads that are targeted on the page are related to DotNetNuke or CMS. The rest of the pages are getting ads that are appropriately aimed at gadgets, but that page gets DNN information.

What's in a name?

Have you just started up a website or weblog and now want to get people to visit? It used to be a matter of submitting the site to search engines and eventually some traffic would build up. That’s no longer the case, now you have to build your case with the search engines. Many search engines have built into them algorithms that check for the popularity of the site. You need to know how to build your site’s reputation in order to get search engines to notice you.

Build Credibility at the Start

When you first go and purchase your domain name, one piece of advice I can provide is to register your domain for at least 5 years, if you can go for 10 years then do that. This makes the search engines “think” your site is a valid site, and not some quickly propped up spam site. Google for instance checks the domain registration information for how many years your site has been registered.  In addition, they may also check to see the informat ... Read More »

I launched RedmondGadgets.com this week and it went very well. One of the stories was promoted on Digg.com which is very good. This story was aimed at the Xbox and PS3 competition at the Apollo in Harlem. That story alone built some good traffic for the site.

Another story is a video tutorial I made up for the Q1 and it running under Vista. This is generating a good amount of traffic from Channel 9 and the Origami Project site ... Read More »

I've been working on developing some new tools for my WWWCoder.com site. As mentioned in my blog article yesterday on blog pinging, I developed a blog ping tool which enables you to ping several sites that maintain notifications on blog updates. Remember not to ping a site too much as this will get you labeled as a spammer. Some of the ping sites will actually maintain a copy of the last item within your RSS feed and will mark your submission as a duplicate if you pinged the site without adding content.

In addition to the blog ping tool, I posted a site submission service to WWWCoder.com today. This will enable you submit your URL to several director ... Read More »

A common function built into many weblog tools is ping, no I'm not talking about the common network tool for testing to see if a network node is running and available. This ping is for letting websites know that your weblog has been updated.

There are many ping servers available to send ping notifications to, most notably VeriSign's Weblogs.com server, but there others like Yahoo's blo.gs, and Google's new blogsearch (blogsearch.google.com) engine.

Pinging is something that every site owner should know about. New search engines that spider weblog content and Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds are gaining in popularity. These include Technorati, Feedster.com, and Google's Blogsearch engine (as mentioned previously). People query these new engines to get timely information from weblogs and sites that provide RSS feeds.

RSS feeds have gained in popularity with the growing number of Weblogs on the ... Read More »
